Follow these steps to avoid falling victim to burnout

If you’re constantly exhausted, finding it difficult to sleep and feeling overwhelmed by work demands you could be suffering from burnout.

GP Punam Krishan explained, “Burnout is the product of the 24/7 existence that we are all now living and working through, where there is no escape from the calls, the work emails, the social media ... the constant interactions that we have.”

But as Dr Krishan revealed for The Social, there are steps we can take to prevent it from happening to us.

How To Avoid Burnout With Dr Punam Krishan

If you're exhausted all the time, that could be a sign of burnout.

  • Ask yourself, 'Am I doing the right job?’ “Is it a job that’s bringing meaning and purpose to your life?”
  • Take ‘me time’ “Do yourself a favour and take some time out for you.”
  • Prioritise “It’s easy to get overwhelmed. By making an achievable list of your tasks in order of priority you will make life a lot easier for yourself.”
  • Eat good food “By chucking down junk food your energy levels and your attention levels are going to dip and you’re not going to be able to churn out good quality work.”
  • Prioritise sleep "The quality of your sleep will directly affect the quality of your work and your state of mind. If you’re suffering from stress or anxiety or insomnia then discuss this with your GP.”
  • Self-compassion breaks "Throughout the day go out – whether it’s getting a few minutes of fresh air or whether it’s going to the toilet and just doing some breathing exercises, just check in to how you’re feeling. And if you’re feeling really overwhelmed talk to someone, just don’t bottle it up.”
  • Switch off "When we don’t switch off we can turn to some negative behaviours or harmful habits. If you recognise that you’re looking for escapism every night after work it may be time to act. Speak to your GP.”
