‘A chance to tell a story I don’t think has been told before’ — Chloë Grace Moretz on authentic voices in the film industry

5 September 2018

“I think the problem is they’re hiring directors that aren’t a part of the community.”

Actress Chloë Grace Moretz is talking about the film industry and its perspective on the LGBT community. In her latest movie, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, she plays a teenager sent away to a Christian gay conversion camp in the 1990s.

“This film is written and directed by a queer woman. Not just a queer woman, but a queer Iranian-American woman. The adversity she’s seen in her life – and the way she deals with her adversity – is, a lot of the time, through comedy, which is how we deal with a lot of our obstacles through life.

“We find the silver linings and the levity in moments to get through the dark moments. This movie is a different perspective; it's really enlightening to watch that.”

She continued, “This was the chance [for me] to tell a story I don’t think had been told before; the chance to work with a director whose perspective deserves to be told.”

A topic close to her heart

Chloë has two brothers in the LGBT community. She described the issues and adversity her family faced, growing up in a small town in Georgia, USA.

“We all understood our responsibility. I understood the responsibility that I could be the first line in defending them and who they are.

“I have always loved my brothers unconditionally, but I learned to use my voice as an ally for the LGBT community from a very young age.”
