Nanna Pat's Golden Layer Bake
Morning Live viewer Nanna Pat sent us in this recipe for her Golden Layer Bake. Nanna Pat says it makes a meal for two adults, and she suggests serving it with green veg.
Ingredients
• ¼ pint of milk
• 1 egg
• 2 sausages (herby or spicy work well – good quality if possible)
• 1 onion
• 1 carrot
• 2oz of Cheese (60g)
• 1 large potato
• 1 tbsp plain or self-raising flour
• Salt and pepper
Method
- Cook the peeled and sliced potato and carrot in boiling water for about 5 mins with a little salt. You are only partly cooking.
- Slice the potatoes fairly thickly. Strain and put to one side.
- Heat a little oil in a frying pan, cook the sausages and onion for about 5 mins put to one side.
- Grate the cheese and slice the sausages.
- Blend your flour with a little of the milk, then gradually add the rest.
- Beat the egg and add to milk and flour. Mix well with a little salt and pepper.
- Put a layer of potato and carrot in the bottom of a greased oven proof dish which is at least 11/2 pint capacity. Cover with the onion and sliced sausages.
- Sprinkle on a little of the cheese.
- Top with remaining potato and carrot.
- Pour over milk mixture, stir first as it may have settled. Sprinkle the top with remaining cheese.
- Bake at mark 3 or 160 degrees for about 1 ½ hours.
- The time will vary a bit depending on size of dish. You will know it’s cooked when the savoury custard is set.
- You can double the quantity, it will then serve 4-5 dish will need to be at least 3 pint capacity. Do more layers if necessary.
