19 hangover 鈥榗ures鈥 to help you toast the end of Dry January

31 January 2019

Dry January: an opportunity for people to see if they can go a full month without alcohol.

At the end of the month, some participants continue the journey and end up reaping the benefits of further abstention.

Others, however, will be reaching for their favourite alcoholic beverage as the calendar flips over to 1 February.

Here are some ‘cures’ for those Dry January participants who find themselves with a sore head the morning after their first drink for a month. Some are commonplace; some are weird and wonderful; but all of them claim to fight that most dreaded effect of drinking — the hangover.

Studying hangovers across the world

Author Shaughnessy Bishop-Stall spent 10 years researching different hangover remedies across the world.

As well as bizarre options like the feted charcoal and milk mix, Bishop-Stall also tried considered by the locals as a hangover cure.

The science behind hangovers

Genetics plays a big part in hangovers. 20-25% of drinkers who claim to not get hangovers have their ancestors to thank.

Amino acids in asparagus are said to be a helpful hangover cure, as well as Korean pear — but only if you have certain genes.
