Meet The Audio Lab Champions

´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio, audio and podcasts hosts share why they’re excited about ´óÏó´«Ã½ Sounds Audio Lab and why you should apply!

Poppy Jay – Director & Podcaster (of award winning podcast 'Brown Girls Do It Too')

“What I find incredibly satisfying is just how diverse and super niche podcasting is, it's opened our worlds and quite literally changed lives. One example is Serial’s Adnan Sayed story. Doing my podcast has changed MY life so I can’t gas about it enough! The world of podcasting can be quite daunting though, as everyone’s nan and next-door neighbour seems to have one, so I think if I was starting now, I’d feel a bit overwhelmed. Having a programme like Audio Lab would have given me the road map and the tools to boost my confidence and to help amplify my voice sooner.”

Summaya Mughal - Senior ´óÏó´«Ã½ Presenter (and creator/ presenter of podcast ‘Brown Gal Can't Swim’)

“I love podcasting because of the positive impact it can have. Whether that’s escapism, making you laugh out loud, or giving voice to a person or perspective not heard before. It has the power to make you listen (like really listen) and learn. That’s pretty cool.

If Audio Lab had been available to me, it would have given me the confidence to give my idea a go with the practical and professional backing to succeed. From the training and mentoring to recording and promoting my work. It’s a valuable opportunity I wish I’d had before making my first podcast for sure! It’s important to have a programme like Audio Lab so that there’s a place, on a platform like the ´óÏó´«Ã½, that offers a platform to hear different voices and perspectives, reflecting our lives, areas, and communities.”

Islah - Actor / Presenter (´óÏó´«Ã½ Asian Network)

“We live in a world where we consume information visually: be it billboards, social media, or videos. However, audio has you to create imagery unique to each listener - through the art of sound. That's why I love it! I started my own podcast in 2020, extensively researching expensive equipment; finding my voice; how to build narratives and choose the best interviewing techniques. It was tough so had Audio Lab had been around, it would have been a huge help. I feel honoured to be an Audio Lab Champion and pass on what I've learnt to new talent to avoid my struggles and shine on their own!”

De-Graft Mensah – Presenter ('If You Don't Know' podcast)

“Podcasting is great for someone like me who just loves a conversation! I think podcasting has the great skill of conversation that you can gain from radio but a sense of laidback-ness that you don't really get from anywhere else. Audio Lab is important because the podcast market can look oversaturated at times and hard to break into so anything that gives you the chance to get your foot in the door is something to be celebrated. Plus, you get paid for doing something that you love that could potentially turn into a career. What's not to love about that?”
