Making a Murderer 2: Brendan Dassey鈥檚 lawyers arrive in the UK

7 December 2018

Brendan Dassey was one of the subjects of the hit documentary series Making a Murderer. Now his real-life post-conviction lawyers have arrived in the UK to begin an ‘in conversation’ tour, starting with an event in Glasgow.

Laura Nirider and Steve Drizin – two of the legal minds from the programme’s second series, which premiered in October on Netflix – intend to meet and talk to people across the country who, like them, were shocked at the conviction of the Wisconsin teen whom Nirider described as “mentally limited”.

“It’s a chance for me to really engage with people of Scotland and elsewhere,” she said. “People who saw that videotape [of Dassey’s interrogation] just as I did and got just as angry and just as motivated to make change.”

Nirider spoke to 大象传媒 Radio Scotland’s The Afternoon Show about how she first became involved with the case.

Making a Murderer: Defence Lawyer Laura Nirider

We hear from one of the defence lawyers featured in the Netflix鈥檚 'Making a Murderer'

“When Brendan was convicted in 2007, right after his conviction some leading attorneys in Wisconsin reached out to my colleague Steve Drizin who is one of the nation’s leading experts on the problem of false confession.

“They asked him to become involved in Brendan’s appeal.

“I was a third-year law student who had just signed up to take his class on wrongful convictions and false confessions, knowing absolutely nothing about either topic.

“Steve happened to assign me to help him on the Brendan Dassey case. I remember this like it was yesterday. He handed me those interrogation videos, the same videos that the world has seen in Making a Murderer.

“I brought them home, I sat on my couch and I watched this interrogation of Brendan Dassey and it was like the world stopped. I felt absolute outrage and heartbreak and I knew that I had to do something about it.”
