Installing the Game on a Mac

This section provides help if you are installing the game on a Mac. There is another section providing help for PC users.

I have downloaded the game found the game installer icon. How do I install the game?

The installer contains everything you need run the game. This includes all the 3D models, textures and audio files.

To help locate the game installer it will have an icon similar to (opens in new window) but the text may change depending upon which game you are installing.

Double click on the icon (it will look similar to the one above, the name may change depending upon the game) and follow the instructions on screen. You will need to accept the licence terms to install the game.

The complete installation should not take more than a few minutes.

During the game installation I see a License Agreement. What happens if I do not accept the agreement?

If you do not accept the agreement you will not be able to install the game and installation of all files will cease. You will be returned to the desktop.

When I try to install the game it says I must be connected to the internet. What does this mean?

When you install the game the machine needs to be connected to the internet to be able to verify the machine is within the UK.

If you are not connected to the internet, you will see this message:

'You need to be connected to the internet to install the Adventure Games. Please check your connection and try again or go to bbc.co.uk/doctorwho for more information.'

This means that the machine is not connected to the internet. Close the installer, connect the machine to the internet and try again.

If the problem persists it may be due to a firewall, a router or security settings blocking the connection. Try looking for any new dialogue boxes and follow the instructions. If none are seen try checking the configuration of the anti-virus, firewall, router and security settings.

When I try to install the game I a message saying the game can only be installed in the UK. What does this mean?

When you install the game the machine needs to be connected to the internet to be able to verify the IP address of the machine is within the UK. If you are not in the UK you will see this message:

'This version of the Adventure Games can only be installed in the UK. Please go to www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho for more information'.

This means that the IP address of the installing machine is outside of the IP address ranges assigned to the UK.

The ´óÏó´«Ã½ Geo-IP technology system recognises IP addresses provided by UK-based internet service providers (ISPs). If the Game Installer doesn't recognise your address, you must contact your ISP as they alone can register your address.

Occasionally it may simply be a network error, so it's worth closing your browser or router and reopening as a new IP address may be allocated which may be UK-based.

During installation of the game I see an instruction to double click on the 'Doctor Who - Game Name' file. What should I do?

In order to confirm the installation of the game you need to double click on the opening box icon.

This starts the next stage of the installation.

During the game installation I see a 'Select a Destination' screen. What do I need to do?

The installer is giving you the option to install the game somewhere other than the default location.

If you have plenty of space on your main drive, simply select the Continue button.

However if you have less than 2 Gb free space on your main drive, or you want to install the game elsewhere, then select the Go Back button and select Change Install Location on the previous screen.

During the game installation, I see a screen asking me to type a password to allow the Installer to make changes. What do I need to do?

This is a feature of the Macintosh operating system. It requires you to type the admin password for the machine to allow the game installer to make changes on the system.

This is standard practice for the Macintosh operating system.

If you do not know the password you need to ask the owner of the machine to supply it, otherwise you will not be able to finish installing the game.

The game installer told me I had successfully installed the game. How do I start playing the game?

During the installation process you can tick a box to add the game to your Dock. We recommend you do this. When the game has finished installing you should find the shortcut icon in your Dock. It will look similar to  (opens in new window), although the name may change depending upon the game:

Click this icon to launch the game.

If the TARDIS isn't in your Dock, go to Finder and open the Applications folder. Find the Doctor Who - The Adventure Games folder (or Doctor Who - The Gunpowder Plot folder if that's the game you've installed) and click on the TARDIS icon to play the game.

I have successfully installed the game. When I try to play the game I see a message that the Adventure Games have broken. What does this mean?

If you move the folder in which the Adventure Games have been installed you will see this message:

'The installation of the Adventure Games appears to have been broken. Please re-install the game.'

You will only see this message when you have attempted to move the games' installed files onto another machine. You need to install the game using the game installer onto the machine where you want to play the game.
