Will stealing influencers' ideas help Fern Brady go viral?
Comedian Fern Brady is fed up with the slog of the stand-up circuit. There must be an easier way to make a living...
"Stand-up comedy is the slowest, most masochistic way to get famous," says Fern Brady. "I'm tired of travelling around the world, earning pennies trying to make people laugh."
She can't even find light relief online due to the constant parade of young influencers living their best life and getting paid for it.
"Kids out there are making big money and getting famous without having to leave the house," she complains in Fern Brady Goes Viral. "I’m going to watch the most influential influencers on the internet and steal their ideas."
"I’m ready to become a viral star."
'Be yourself'
As Fern begins her research she’s confronted by a barrage of chirpy performers, but when YouTuber Sparkle Mariee posts that the key to success online is to 'be yourself', it strikes a chord.
"If I can get away with being myself, which is a socially awkward misanthrope, then I can surely find an audience of other people like that,” says Fern.
Armed with her new-found knowledge of what influencers do and how they do it, Fern takes the plunge by filming scenes from her own fabulous life. She begins with an inspirational lifestyle film of her morning routine.

'Enjoy your success'
However, the path to fame and massive fortune isn't as straightforward as Fern had hoped. She reveals the most important lesson she's learned from studying the videos — and the problem it gives her.
"The key thing to being a successful influencer is to just unashamedly enjoy your success," she says. "Which really goes against everything Scottish culture stands for."
"We can only really show ourselves unashamedly enjoying ourselves if we’re drunk, or watching England get beat at football."
