‘Really Wild’ advice for young people worried about the planet

When pupils from a Scottish Highland school interviewed wildlife TV presenters Michaela Strachan and Chris Packham, they were able to secure some sound advice for young people worried about their planet.

With Autumnwatch currently stationed in Cairngorm National Park, the pupils were just a hop and a jump from the wildlife duo better known to some as enthusiastic presenters on The Really Wild Show in the 1990s.

Enlisting the help of ´óÏó´«Ã½'s The L.A.B., the pupils took the opportunity to grill them on topics such as their favourite season and the best part of their job.

At the end of the interview they cleverly asked these two veterans of kids wildlife TV what they think children can do to save the planet.

"The trouble is there's so many things that need help", says Michaela.

"As a young person maybe choose your favourite thing. Choose the thing that really interests you and then get involved in the charity, raise funds for the charity, get involved in writing letters and asking policies to change and make a difference."

"We've lost 50% of the world's wildlife on my watch" — Chris Packham

Chris Packham had a less softly-softly approach:

"Also at this time I think it's really important that young people ask us older people to 'get on with it'— because we've largely failed you."

"We've lost 50% of the world's wildlife on my watch and I'm meant to be caring about it."

"So I think that young people are understandably a bit frustrated with the fact that we're leaving you a world that's in a worst state than the one that we inherited and I'm embarrassed about that"

"So I don't mind you kicking me up the backside and saying make some changes get on with it!"

Their inspiring words got us reminiscing about The Really Wild Show — who can forget that , not to mention their very funky original logo and Chris's style (see below)?

With 22 years experience between them on the BAFTA award-winning children's show and now their contribution to the much-loved grown up version, "The Watches", Chris and Michaela have earned the trust of children and adults alike on all things wild.
