Woman's Hour Power List 2020: Our Planet

The Woman’s Hour Power List 2020: Our Planet is looking for 30 women based in the UK who are making a significant positive contribution to the environment or the sustainability of our planet.

It will showcase inspirational initiatives and stories that are bringing about real change at all levels of society – from influencing global policy and changing human behaviour, to inventing eco-friendly products, spearheading scientific research, volunteering in community gardens, and inspiring a deep love of the natural world.

They will fall into one of five categories that reflect the huge range of work women are doing in the name of our planet:

Suggest someone for the list

If you would like to suggest a woman who you think deserves to be considered for the Woman’s Hour Power List 2020, then please let us know by midnight on Tuesday 6th October 2020.

You can do so by emailing the programme at womanshour.yourviews@bbc.co.uk and telling us:

  • Their name

  • A description of what they’ve done and what makes them exceptional

  • The category you think they’re eligible for

Please note that suggestions do not constitute a formal nomination.

Decision-makers

For the women working in policy, politics, big business and on global panels with the power to bring about large-scale change.

Innovators

For the scientific researchers finding answers to the big questions facing our planet, and the innovators creating eco-friendly alternatives that are changing everyday behaviours.

Communicators

For the women using different forms of media, education or the arts to help the wider public feel passionate about the natural world, better understand the problems the Earth is facing, or think about the way we use resources.

Campaigners

For those women who use their voices and influence to fight for change on a global or local scale. This could be individuals running small but highly effective campaigns through to women leading the UK’s biggest NGOs and charities.

Volunteers

The power to bring about change can come in all shapes and sizes. Our volunteer category is for outstanding women who’ve made a significant contribution to the environment or sustainability in their local area. This could be someone working in a nature reserve, setting up a network of gardens, making their town plastic-free, tackling local pollution, protecting a woodland or river, starting a recycling revolution, inspiring a whole community to take action… the possibilities are endless!

The Criteria

The Woman’s Hour Power List 2020: Our Planet is open to all women who:

  • Are based in the UK, although they can be working elsewhere in the world
  • Are making a significant positive contribution to any aspect of our planet, the environment or sustainability
  • Have brought about real change or progress – whether locally, nationally or globally
  • Fit into at least one of the five categories

What's the environment got to do with women?

Our planet is a home for us all. But globally, women are on the front-line when it comes to the consequences of environmental change. They are the people most likely to collect water, food and fuel – all of which are becoming scarcer or more expensive. Women are also more likely to face poverty and financial insecurity, making them less able to adapt to a changing world. This list aims to recognise and champion the women who are doing something about these issues.
