Will there ever be a time when footballers feel safe coming out?

24 July 2019

There hasn’t been an openly gay footballer playing in Britain’s professional leagues since former Norwich, Nottingham Forrest and Hearts player Justin Fashanu came out in 1990.

That was all set to change with The Gay Footballer: a Twitter account believed to be run by a young player in England’s Championship, who proposed to reveal his identity on 24 July.

However, account was deleted the night before the expected reveal. Seemingly the enormity of the situation led the unknown player to rethink his actions.

Mornings with Calum Macdonald asked Justin Fashanu’s niece Amal whether the footballing world remains an impossible place for young men to come out as openly gay.

Is enough being done to help gay footballers come out?

Amal Fashanu’s uncle Justin was the UK’s first openly gay footballer.
