Cycle routes unlocking the scenic sides of maligned UK towns

The cycle paths around Paisley helped The Social contributor Dangerdebbs explore the areas around her hometown.
And she’s unlikely to be alone, following news that the Scottish government plans to invest more money in cycle routes across the country.
Their aim is to encourage a more ‘active nation’.
Cycling encourages a healthier lifestyle, but also helps people connect with the otherwise-untapped surroundings of the towns and cities in which they live.
Investment in cycling infrastructure has been earmarked in major cities across the UK in a bid to develop links between city centres and surrounding towns and suburbs.
Chorlton and the wheels
Chortlon-Cum-Hardy plans to rejuvenate its town centre by improving its cycle lane network.
Developing 5km of cycle lanes will create links between the town and the centre of Manchester, resulting in a safer route for cyclists into the city.
Stevenage’s cycle inspiration
Dutch cities are famously cyclist friendly already. Almere is one such example: a city whose inhabitants make good use of a successfully implemented cycle network.
What sets Almere’s cycle network apart from those of other Dutch cities, however, is that its designs were based on those for one of the UK’s often-maligned towns: Stevenage.
