Forget the idea that some MPs are out of touch with the electorate ...one can’t even understand a fellow English-speaking politician!

18 October 2018

The cross-party divide can sometimes be responsible for political opponents not seeing eye to eye, but how should you react when a fellow politician can’t understand your Scottish accent?

That’s precisely what happened to SNP MP David Linden.

His Conservative colleague Sir Paul Beresford MP – himself the holder of a strong accent from his native New Zealand – had to ask Mr Linden not once, but twice to repeat his question in the House of Commons.

Though Sir Paul looked suitably embarrassed by his struggle with the Scot’s (admittedly pacy) delivery, is this newest example of the Scottish accent being misunderstood grounds for those north of the border to feel aggrieved?

What about Scots who can’t understand one of their own?
