The man who brought a Norwegian street art idea to the UK and transformed his city’s ‘eyesore’ buildings into the perfect canvas

19 September 2018

Artist Martyn Reed is on a mission to remove the barriers that make art inaccessible and to return it to the people.

He founded Nuart, a street art festival in Aberdeen now in its second year.

Martyn described the importance of thinking differently about art: “It’s a really common misconception that there are not so many people interested in contemporary art — that the access points you need are an education; an understanding of critical theory; an extensive vocabulary.

“Street art just strips that away and you enter art on your own terms, at your own level. There’s nothing to tell you that you’re wrong or you’re right.’

Martyn Reed identified many locations suitable for street art.

“It’s just the perfect canvas,” said artist Jasmin Siddiqui of one particular Aberdeen ‘eyesore’.

“I love the fact that people have referred to it as one of the ugliest buildings here. I just love it because it’s exactly our job to beautify.”
