Tectonics 2025 Artist Profile

Kjetil M酶ster

Kjetil Møster (b. 1976, Bergen, Norway) is a saxophonist and composer working and performing professionally in multiple musical genres since year 2000.
His musical upbringing was spent alternating between classical music and being a bass player in a thrash/punk metal band through his early teens, until jazz music (especially the works of John Coltrane) "took him" around the age of 18.

During studies at the renowned "Jazzlinja" in Trondheim (1998-2002), he was drawn towards more experimental kinds of acoustic and electroacoustic improvisation, and was simultaneously performing with the successful Coltrane/Pharoah style jazz band The Core, as well as being part of the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra project with Chick Corea, both of which brought Møster to the public's attention.

His 铿乺st years as a professional musician included numerous album releases and extensive touring with bands like Ultralyd (Rune Grammofon), Zanussi Five (Moserobie), The Core (Jazzaway) and other Trondheim Jazz Orchestra projects, as well as ad hoc constellations with the likes of Jon Christensen, Paal Nilssen-Love, Maja Ratkje, Jim Black, Andrew D'Angelo, Ståle Storløkken to name a few, whilst also touring with glam rockers King Midas. Møster was awarded with the "International Jazz Talent of the Year" prize in 2006, as well as awards by Nattjazz and Vossa Jazz, and also contributed on several albums winning the Norwegian version of the Grammy award, "Spellemannsprisen".

In 2007 Møster joined international electro-rock success Datarock on a permanent basis, touring continuously worldwide for a few years, hence taking a break from the jazz scene.

In 2010, the urge for improvisation and experiments reemerged, and Møster was given the opportunity to assemble a band for a commissioned concert at Kongsberg Jazz Festival. This manifested as the band Møster! performing a highly successful concert (the 铿乺st version was with Ståle Storløkken on Hammond organ, Fender Rhodes and synths), continuing with several live concerts and their 铿乺st album release on Hubro, Edvard Lygre Møster, in 2013.

In 2014, Storløkken pulled out of the band due to the obvious similarities with his organ trio Elephant9, whereupon Hans Magnus 'Snah' Ryan from Motorpsycho happily replaced him. This led to four consecutive releases on Hubro: Inner Earth (2014), When You Cut Into The Present (2015), States of Minds (2018) and Dust Breathing (2020).

'Springs' was out in September 2024 on Action Jazz, a label run by Møster, Ando Woltmann and in-house designer Nick Alexander.

During the last 10 years, Møster has been part of an impressive array of musical projects in a vast diversity of musical genres and performance situations. In addition to leading Møster! and co-leading the band The End with saxophonist Mats Gustafsson having their 4th album coming up, he has been playing as a trio with John Edwards and Dag Erik Knedal Andersen, toured with Röyksopp & Robyn, written commissioned work for Bergen based contemporary music sinfonietta BIT20 Ensemble, done a PhD in artistic research at the Grieg Academy in Bergen, toured with Gard Nilssen's Supersonic Orchestra and Acoustic Unity, started playing with So铿乤 Jernberg's new quartet Eroica I with Petter Eldh and Kit Downes, won two Spellemannsprisen awards in the Contemporary Music category, been invited to join Seb Rochford's project Pulled by Magnets, in addition to numerous concerts and releases with various ad hoc constellations and session work.
