Could it be true that Glasgow leads the world in sports mascots?

25 October 2018

‘Scottee’ has been unveiled as the face of 2019’s European Athletics Indoor Championships.

The Scottie dog mascot will play a huge part in welcoming some of the world’s leading athletes to Glasgow’s Emirates Arena as the Championships return to the city for the first time since 1990.

So why, whenever a mascot makes the news, it always seems to be connected to Glasgow? Let’s take a look at some of the biggest names in the mascot game that have come out of the city in recent years:-

Clyde from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games

The thistle man named Clyde was unveiled as the official mascot of the 2014’s Commonwealth Games.

Clyde is the one in the middle

Clyde was hard to miss during the Games and their run-up as he often accompanied the Queen’s baton as it made its way around the Commonwealth.

Named after the river flowing through the host city, it was designed by Beth Gilmour from Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire when she was 12 years old. She won a UK-wide competition, which attracted more than 4,000 entries.

Beth said: “It’s amazing to see Clyde come to life and I’m so happy that my design and idea will now be seen by everyone across the world.”

Clyde was unveiled in an expense-spared(!) ceremony at ´óÏó´«Ã½ Scotland’s Glasgow headquarters.

Kingsley, the scary mascot for Partick Thistle FC

in 2015 and it went viral for all the wrong reasons. Or maybe it was for the right ones?

Wonder why they didn’t call it Jaggy?

The creation, named Kingsley, was initially compared to a badly-drawn Lisa Simpson and a demonic sun, was designed by the artist (and Thistle fan) David Shrigley to celebrate a new sponsorship deal for the club.

Kinglsey was said to be ‘terrifying’ when first revealed. The Twitter-storm that ran and ran might just have been the point...

These days people have grown rather fond of Kingsley and he’s . Funny what you can adjust to, eh?

Bonnie the harbour seal at Glasgow 2018

In the summer of 2018, Glasgow and Berlin hosted the inaugural European Championships — and Bonnie the harbour seal was the mascot. Outgoing almost to a fault, Bonnie provided her own quotes for the media when she launched:

A ‘seal’ of approval for Glasgow

“Hey, my name is Bonnie and I love meeting new people and trying new things. I’m really adventurous and I discovered a lot about some amazing sports when I swam all the way from Argyll, up the Clyde to the exciting city of Glasgow.”

The games were a multi-sport event that brought together athletics, aquatics, cycling, gymnastics, rowing, golf and triathlon.
