Seven pop stars who have starred in sci-fi

Rihanna walked the red carpet this week at the London premiere of her new film, Valerian. She plays a shape-changing alien in the movie, so it's safe to say this is not a family drama.

Rihanna talks about her new movie, Valerian

She hit the red (well, blue actually) carpet at the London premiere.

Musicians are all too keen to jump into the movie world and many of them have found themselves in a different world altogether. Here are seven of our favourite pop star cameos in space adventures, superhero films and science fiction.

SPOILER: Things don't end well for various members of The Black Eyed Peas :(

Rihanna

Rihanna plays a 'glampod' named Bubble in Luc Besson's new movie. She's a singing alien who can shape-shift and uses this power when she's performing.

It does away with all those nuisance costume changes, that's for sure.

Rihanna only appears as herself for a brief period in the movie, but did motion capture for the CGI character for the rest of Bubble's scenes in the movie.

Childish Gambino

The second most important character in the upcoming Han Solo movie will probably be Chewbacca. The third will be Lando Calrissian, and he will be played by Donald Glover AKA Childish Gambino.

Donald will play a young version of the iconic Star Wars character in 2018's (as-yet-untitled) prequel movie. He's even grown a Lando moustache for the part.

Donald even says the character may be more in depth than most people realise.

"I think even Han isn’t as complicated as Lando is," he said in a 2017 interview with Deadline magazine.

"From the first time you meet him, you don’t know whether to trust him or not, and you’re constantly not knowing whether to trust him. I like that about him."

Gary Barlow

Donald Glover isn't the only musician set to enter the war between the rebel alliance and The Empire, Gary Barlow's signing up too.

The Take That frontman confirmed his appearance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi in the very non sci-fi setting of ITV's Lorraine TV show, saying that he wouldn't be playing a stormtrooper, like Daniel Craig did when he made a cameo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

We'll find out whether the force is strong with Gary this Christmas, when The Last Jedi hits cinemas.

will.i.am

The first Wolverine movie isn't generally considered to be the greatest moment in the X-Men's movie history, but it did give will.i.am the opportunity to explore his mutant side.

The Black Eyes Peas star played the role of Wraith in the 2013 film, a teleporting mutant and it was will's first movie role. Sadly, his mutant character was killed so we won't be seeing him again in any X-Men or Wolverine sequels.

Chris Martin

Coldplay's Chris Martin had two roles in the 2004 zombie comedy Shaun Of The Dead, playing a supporter of a zombie charity (everyone needs help, even the dead) and more importantly, a member of the undead horde.

He can be spotted if you really squint at a scene towards the end of the film, as the two lead characters make their final escape from the pub they had been hiding in.

Fergie

will.i.am isn't the only Black Eyed Peas member who we've seen killed in the movies, Fergie didn't fare much better when she appeared in Planet Terror in 2007.

She was eaten by zombies while she was en route to meet girlfriend Dakota, with whom she was planning to run away with. Zombies do have a habit of ruining a happy ending to a good love story.

Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga

Blink and you'll miss them, but both Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga appeared in Men In Black 3, where they were outed as aliens.

They were both seen in screens during a very brief sequence, but at least it confirmed all our suspicions about why they are both so talented.
