Quiz time! How well do you know your Pride flags?

The iconic rainbow flag was designed by artist Gilbert Baker, who was asked by Californian politician Harvey Milk – the first openly gay elected official – to come up with a symbol of pride for the gay community.

Using the colours of the rainbow to represent various elements of gay culture, Baker created a design with which the gay and lesbian community immediately identified.

But visit any Pride festival and you’ll see many more flags waving than just the rainbow. How well do you know them?

The history of Pride

Learning All About Pride!

Pride is fun, but it's important to learn its history.

Stonewall – the origin of Pride

On 28 June 1969, a bar in New York City called The Stonewall Inn was raided by the police and an impromptu gay rights riot broke out.

Three of the people there that night went on to become visionary activists who helped grow the gay rights movement:-

  • Marsha P Johnson – a black, bisexual trans-woman who was also a sex worker
  • Sylvia Riveria – a bisexual trans-woman of Venezuelan and Puerto Rican origin
  • Brenda Howard – a bisexual rights and sex-positive activist

Brenda Howard was seen as the ‘mother’ of Pride. She coordinated the very first Pride, staged on the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall riots on 28 June 1970.

Pride in Scotland

It took until 1995 for Scotland to host its first Pride, when around 3,000 people were in attendance. The event has grown massively since then.
