Tectonics 2023 Artist Profile

Semay Wu

Having lived and worked in numerous musical directions for many years, Semay’s cello still remains at her side: from Merseyside, to Manchester, to The Netherlands, and now to Central Scotland. Always trying to push age-old boundaries of how the instrument is viewed and heard, her approach remains open for exploring relationships within improvisational frameworks. Semay plays with a variety of gestural art disciplines using different blends of electronics with objects, instruments and mixed media. Recent works have been video pieces, performance/interactive-installations, graphic scores, as well as working remotely with communities for an online audio cookbook. Semay released her first solo collection of recorded material in November last year, ‘Raspberry Hotel’, by Akashic Records. In February, two live performances at the Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre in Glasgow will be released by the Scatter Archive Label.

Cellist-improviser, composer and artist Semay Wu’s live performances focus on an improvisational framework that encourages a space for spontaneity within dynamic scenarios. Building on the relationships that emerge, new collaborations and nuances unfold during the timeframe and become, themselves, players.
