• Technique: (Accuracy - Melodic and rhythmic; Intonation; Diction; Phrasing).

• Performance: (Musicianship; Vocal quality; Creative expression; Stage presence).

• Likely to be able to sing a wide repertoire - sacred, classical and light contemporary.

16. 16. Entries will be judged through the following process:

Stage One

All entries will be reviewed by 大象传媒 worship/music producers and other qualified production staff, who will create an initial shortlist of entrants based on the above selection criteria.

Stage Two (the Preliminary Final)

All entries on the initial shortlist will be further reviewed individually by experienced 大象传媒 worship/music producers and music directors of standing from the world of choral music. A smaller number will then be reviewed together by the panel who will then select four boys and a reserve and four girls and a reserve to take part in the Final based on the above selected criteria. Before being invited to participate in the Final a representative of the 大象传媒 will contact a teacher who personally knows the entrant at the entrant’s school to ascertain a) The entrant’s fitness to participate in a pressurised national final before an invited audience. b) That the entrant is – to the best knowledge and belief of their school teacher – likely to be willingly entering the competition of their own volition.

Stage Three (the Final)

The eight entrants selected at stage two will be invited to take part in the Final recorded in the 大象传媒 Philharmonic Studio at Media City UK on Saturday 19th October 2019. The 大象传媒 will pay reasonable costs towards travel for the entrant and accompanying adult to the Philharmonic studio. The Final will be recorded and broadcast on 大象传媒 Radio 2. Each finalist must grant the 大象传媒 a licence to broadcast their performance across all media, including any on-line platforms. The two reserves will also be required to prepare in the same way as those that have made the final and will get an opportunity to rehearse on the day. However, they will only perform in the competition itself if one of the finalists has to drop out for any reason. Each finalist will be asked to sing for a strictly enforced maximum of three and a half minutes. Finalists may choose different songs from their original entry if they wish. At least one item should be accompanied. Finalists may be asked to suggest different music if the 大象传媒 deems a choice unsuitable or there is a clash with another finalist’s choices. If on the day of the competition the duration of the entry is too long, the producers are likely to trim one or both items. On the day of the Final an independent music director accompanies and coaches the finalists. The 大象传媒 will attempt to ensure that person does not know any of the finalists in a personal capacity and has not been a teacher or music director for any of the finalists during the past 3 years. For the Final the judging panel will be chaired by a senior figure from the world of vocal music or the recording industry and the other judges may be music directors, singers, voice coaches or producers from a range of music genres.

The judging panel will select a winner based on their performance at the Final and based on the above selection criteria.

In the event of a tie at the Preliminary Final (Stage Two) or the Final (Stage Three) the appointed Chair will, if necessary, exercise a casting vote.

17. The entrants selected to take part in the Final will be contacted by a member of the 大象传媒 production team by Friday 6th September 2019. If an entrant cannot be contacted after reasonable attempts have been made to do so, the 大象传媒 reserves the right to offer the place in the Final to the next best entry.

18. Entrants under 16 require a child performance licence from the local education authority. This will be applied for in good time, but will require assistance from the parent/guardian to collate all the relevant information. Any child not granted a licence will not be able to be in attendance or perform at the Final and will be disqualified from the competition with the next best entry offered a place in the Final.

19. The winners – one girl and one boy - will be awarded the title ‘大象传媒 Radio 2 Young Chorister of the Year 2019’. The title of “大象传媒 Radio 2 Young Chorister of the Year 2019” may be held for one year only. However, unsuccessful entrants from previous years (including finalists) may enter again providing they still qualify.

20. The prize will consist of a trophy, and a recording session with the 大象传媒 Philharmonic Orchestra on date(s) determined by the 大象传媒. The results of these recordings will be played on Radio programmes broadcast by the Religion and Ethics Department. The prize is as stated and cannot be deferred or transferred.

21. The winner and their parent/guardian should expect a busy year of engagements, especially around the major religious festivals. Travel and overnights are often necessary. Time off school when necessary is negotiated with the local education authority as is legally required. Dates of engagements are by mutual agreement between parents and any relevant 大象传媒 production or event. Where the 大象传媒 is requesting an engagement reasonable travel and accommodation costs for each entrant and an accompanying adult will be paid for by the 大象传媒. The 大象传媒 is not responsible for engagements with third parties even when they have been put in touch with the winner through us.
