In the days before entire democracies were undermined by fake news, it was the internet’s bait and switch of choice: the promise of something amazing at the end of a hyperlink, only to discover its actual – disguised – destination was Rick Astley performing his 1987 hit Never Gonna Give You Up.
Rickrolling began in 2007 and quickly became a phenomenon. The artist at the centre of it all appears to be at peace with his place in pranking history.
