The 200mph teen who ‘flies’ at 15,000ft ...without an aeroplane

31 July 2019

18-year-old Liam Byrne is like most teenagers ...apart from the fact that he enjoys nothing more than jumping out of planes and flying towards the ground at speeds of up to 200mph.

The Stonehaven native is an amateur wingsuit flyer and has made over 550 jumps since he became involved in what could be considered one of the world’s most dangerous sports.

Liam’s dedication to wingsuit flying has seen him win novice gold at the UK Wingsuit Championships. His talents have placed him in the bracket of ones to watch within the world of wingsuit flying.

The next move for the talented young Scot is to join up with an Italian wingsuit acrobatics team so that he can train to take part in multi-person displays and take his wingsuit skills to new heights.

Who came up with the idea of the wingsuit?

Finn Jari Kuosma came up with the idea of making the first commercial wingsuits when he stood on a cliff in Italy, about to do a BASE jump.

His invention can be used in skydiving and BASE jumping to help people fly further – and for longer – in the air than they could without the suit.
