In January, David Beckham appeared on the cover of a magazine wearing green eyeshadow — a move which sparked debate about whether it’s OK for men to wear make-up.
The male cosmetics industry – estimated to be worth over £40 billion worldwide – is booming in popularity. Mornings with Stephen Jardine spoke with make-up artist Susie Scarlet about whether the increased popularity is evidence that the taboo around men’s make-up is becoming a thing of the past.

Susie used the examples of moisturiser and self-tan bronzer as cosmetics products that many men already use.
“Social media makes men with make-up a lot more acceptable.
“Obviously it’s each to their own – everyone can do what they want to do – but [make-up] is a way of expressing yourself and it’s fun.”
Presenter Stephen then shared a story about some “funny looks” he received on a bus ride home from his last TV work. It was only when he woke up the following morning that he realised it was because he was still wearing his studio make-up. What gave it away? The smudge marks on his pillow...
