Sam Smith serenaded us with the only Christmas song he likes in the Live Lounge
Feeling Christmassy yet? Have you decked the halls? Guzzled on some mulled concoction? Pulled your favourite festive PJs out of retirement? No? Oh. Well hopefully our Christmas Live Lounge sessions can change all of that...
We've had Rita Ora pine over , Ed Sheeran and Anne-Marie spin us the and, most recently, Sam Smith serenading us with Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.
Sam covered Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas in the Live Lounge
Chatting to Clara ahead of his cover, Sam revealed that he isn't actually that big a fan of Christmas songs.
A little bit of melancholy at Christmas is my vibeSam Smith
"I don't really like Christmas songs. I'm such a Scrooge when it comes to Christmas songs because I worked in Clinton Cards when I was a kid and they just ruined these Christmas songs for me. There's only one I like and I'm singing that today..."
Right. Disdain for festive tunes aside, Sam delivered a beautiful rendition of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas and had us feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.
"I think Christmas is a nostalgic time and, for me, I found that when I watched Meet Me in St. Louis with Judy Garland singing [Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas], looking out the window and it's snowing... A little bit of melancholy at Christmas is my vibe. I can never be that happy."
And then serenaded us with One Last Song
Not content with channelling classic Christmas vibes, Sam gave us an acoustic version of his latest single One Last Song.
It's the final song for the guy who the first album was aboutSam Smith
Who is this One Last Song for, you might ask? Great question. In The Lonely Hour (Sam's debut album, released in 2014) was about a particular guy in Sam's life, and One Last Song is about the same person...
"It's the final song for the guy who the first album was about. I needed to stop myself so it's good.
"I never thought that the song sounded Christmassy but now when you listen to it, it does a tiny bit."
Before dishing on his 2017 highlights...
Needless to say, it's been a pretty busy year for Sam. From releasing his second album, The Thrill Of It All, and bagging the No.1 spot to shutting down our with a very special gig, it kind of seems as though Sam doesn't really ever stop.
Does the superstar get time off for Christmas? Affirmative.
"I've been lucky, I've had every Christmas off. I've had a week or two around Christmas off since the beginning of my career, I'm very lucky. I'll be in London with my mum and my sisters, it'll be great."
Does he have a stand-out moment of 2017? Affirmative.
"Stand out moment of 2017 for me would have to be when the album was released - the day of release - and when I performed at the Tate Modern. It was just an incredible experience."
Does he have any goals for 2018? Affirmative.
"I hope that I'm fit and healthy and I don't lose my voice. I just want to put on the best show I possibly can and I just want to enjoy it and love it. I can't wait to be on tour."
