Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra (GIO)
Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra (GIO) is a large improvising ensemble of around 30 musicians from diverse artistic backgrounds. They perform across the UK and Europe, host an annual international festival of improvisation and run regular events across the UK, and further afield.
These events, include home and international concerts, community events for all ages, regular virtual ‘global’ concerts, online community sessions, and our annual international festival of improvisation (GIOfest).
In addition to our regular concert series (GIOsessions) and monthly workshop events in the CCA, we hold regular sessions for artists newly experimenting with improvisation (GIOdynamics), monthly workshops for the very young (GIObabies) and weekly international on-line sessions engaging regularly with contemporary musicians from around the world (GIOglobal)
Our breadth of activity spans numerous networks, engaging with all sectors of the community and embracing all abilities, aspirations and artistic goals, while maintaining the highest possible standard of creative excellence.
We have collaborated with and received commissions from a wide range of contemporary artists, including George Lewis, Barry Guy, Jim O'Rourke, Marilyn Crispell, Renee Baker, Gino Robair, Keith Tippett, John Russell, Maggie Nicols, Evan Parker, Ilan Volkov, Alexander Hawkins, Joelle Leandre, large contemporary music ensembles in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Australia and the USA, and many many more.
Our concerts and festivals have been featured in many 大象传媒 broadcasts and we have been featured on many international music media radio and TV stations.
GIO is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2022.
