‘I can tell you what happens behind the scenes on Strictly’
Kim Winston knows more than most about Strictly, because the former fan has worked on the show for more than a decade.
In 2008 Kim Winston was sitting at home watching Rachel Stevens perform on Strictly Come Dancing. Totally absorbed by the show, she began wondering how it was put together.
As she explained on Mornings with Kaye Adams, “I thought, ‘The only way I’m gong to find out is by trying to get a job on it’”.
Fast forward 11 years and Kim is now one of the longest serving members of the production team. She’s also the co-host of the new Strictly Come Dancing podcast, along with 2018 finalist Joe Sugg.
Secrets from the Strictly wardrobe
Strictly’s Kim Winston reveals the weekly pressures faced by the costume department.
The access Kim has behind the scenes is enough to make any Strictly superfan green with envy. But she’s more than happy to reveal what goes on in all areas of production, such as the costume department.
Kim disclosed that costume designer Vicky Gill and her team have an incredibly tight window to prepare each week’s outfits.
“As a production team we will give Vicky a brief on what the dance style is going to be, what the songs are going to be and a little bit of background on the concept.
“So with just that very short brief, Vicky will go away and make her sketches, she’ll bring it into the production meeting and then once that’s signed off she really only has a matter of days to make the costumes with her team.”
Celebrities don’t see their outfits until Friday morning, the day before the live show. So what happens if they don’t like them?
“Initially a celeb may see it and go, ‘I don’t think that’s for me’,” said Kim. “But Vicky will work with them on the parts that they do like and don’t like and they always end up loving it.”
And it’s not just the celebs who have been won over by Vicky’s artistry.
Kim cites the example of dancer Oti Mabuse: “I remember Oti absolutely hated the colour orange; like, it just wasn’t for her and she wouldn’t wear it.
“And then look at her on Saturday night – she looked incredible in her orange [dress] for her samba with Kelvin.”
