You won’t need to bring home any bacon this Christmas if you use The Social’s completely meat-free recipe for pigs in blankets

What happens when you’re vegan and worried that you won’t be able to enjoy the same Christmas dinner as your meat-eating friends and relatives?

You get creative, like AJ Greenway from Here We Vegan Go. Here are his recipes for delicious vegan alternatives to Christmas culinary classics.

Pigs in blankets or veggies in vests?

Prepping the pigs

  1. Dice an onion and add it to a pan of rapeseed oil.
  2. Cook on a medium heat until the onions are soft.
  3. Add half a teaspoon of fennel seeds and half a teaspoon of cumin.
  4. Cook for 2 minutes.
  5. Place the mixture in a blender.
  6. Add 50g of chick peas.
  7. Add a tablespoon of tomato puree.
  8. Add half a teaspoon of thyme and half a teaspoon of smoked paprika.
  9. Add seasoning.
  10. Add a tablespoon of soy sauce.
  11. Mix in 175ml of water and blend.
  12. Add 120g of wheat gluten flour.
  13. Blend again.

Assembling the sausages

  1. Roll mixture into sausage shapes.
  2. Roll each sausage in baking paper.
  3. Roll the baking paper-covered sausages in tin foil and tie at both ends.
  4. Place the foil-covered sausages in a steamer for 20 minutes.
  5. Turn the sausages and steam for another 20 minutes.

Prepping the blankets

  1. Cut 4 cm strips of puff pastry.
  2. Place the sausage on the pastry strip and roll it up.
  3. Use a brush to put a little water on the pastry.
  4. Crimp the edge of the pastry for decoration.
  5. Place all your pigs in blankets in a baking tray.
  6. Use a brush to put some soy milk on the pastry.
  7. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes at 200°C until the pastry is golden brown.
  8. EAT!

Another meat-free Christmas classic: Vegan stuffing balls

Preparation stage

  1. Dice an onion and cook on a medium heat for 2 minutes.
  2. Add half of a diced apple.
  3. Add two tablespoons of sage.
  4. Cook for 2 minutes before placing in a bowl.
  5. Add 70g of dairy free butter.
  6. Add 100g of cranberry sauce.
  7. Add 200g of breadcrumbs.
  8. Add 100g of almond milk.
  9. Add 50g of diced, roasted cashew nuts.
  10. Add egg replacer (the equivalent of one egg).
  11. Add a pinch of salt and a teaspoon of black pepper.
  12. Add a teaspoon of wholegrain mustard.
  13. Mix the mixture!

Baking stage

  1. Roll into small balls.
  2. Place on a baking tray.
  3. Drizzle with olive oil.
  4. Cook in the over for 25 minutes at 180°C.
