What’s so special about the UK sound?
We sat down with some of our Hot For 2017 acts to discuss why British music is so unique.
AJ Tracey

- One of the biggest rising stars in grime, AJ Tracey’s wordplay and delivery make him a big prospect for 2017.
- From West London, AJ’s had a massive year. He hit the summer festival circuit for the first time, and he’s just released a new EP.
- He’s seriously versatile, nailing everything from rowdy club bangers to sweetboy jams and gritty road anthems.
Avelino

- From Tottenham, Avelino is a rapper who’s been doing big things over the past few years.
- He started out putting freestyles on YouTube, and has since released a couple of mixtapes (one of which was a collaboration with ).
- He’s got other high profile friends too, supporting on tour in 2015. Avelino’s known for his wordplay and released his debut EP this year.
Dave

- From Streatham in south London, rapper and producer Dave has been busy making a name for himself freestyling and recording his debut EP, which dropped back in September.
- His music spans different tempos and styles, and his lyrics are smart, raw, and don’t shy away from social commentary.
- He’s got famous fans - including , and who recently remixed Dave’s track Wanna Know.
The Fedz

- The Fedz are a collective of 14 artists from all across the globe. They’ve only been together for 5 months but they’ve already recorded an album, ready to drop in 2017.
- Their diverse backgrounds come through in their music, with their first two tracks mixing reggae and soul influences with seriously tight musicianship.
- Everyone likes to get out and about, but The Fedz take it to another level. They’ve been reviving classic sound system culture across London with their van, and once shut down Oxford Circus.
Jorja Smith

- Just 19 years old, we know Jorja’s got a big future ahead of her with once picking her song Where Did I Go? as his favourite track of the moment.
- Her musical style is emotive, and mixes soul influences with R&B.
- She’s from Walsall, and recently got a MOBO Best Song nomination for her track Blue Lights.
MIST

- Rapper Mist has been on rapid ascent in the last year, racking up an insane amount of YouTube views in 2016.
- He’s got a massive fan following - dates had to be added to his upcoming tour after the first run of shows sold out within an hour.
- You can see why his tracks have gone big on YouTube. His music is anthemic and catchy, and he goes all out for his visuals (he went all the way to Dubai to shoot his latest video)
MoStack

- The North London rapper has had a 2016 to remember. He got a nomination at the 2016 MOBO Awards for Best Newcomer, and racked up millions of views on YouTube.
- Talented? Yep. He’s known for his unique flows, stylish charisma, and creative visuals.
- He’s an unrelenting force of big tracks, big shows and even bigger numbers. Bring on 2017.
Ray BLK

- Ray was making music from the age of ten, filling her school notebooks with original song lyrics.
- From Catford in South London, her music is a blend of soul and R&B. She’s all about honesty, with her candid lyrics and rap-inspired delivery.
- She only decided she wanted to share her music with the world in her final year of uni, finding instrumentals on YouTube to set her lyrics to.

- RAYE not only writes and performs her own songs, but also writes for other people (she helped write ’s After the Afterparty).
- Originally from South London, her style is a mixture of pop, R&B and electronic.
- Her first songwriting collaboration was at the of 10 with her dad - together they wrote songs about playground bullies. Too cute.
Stefflon Don

- Smart, stylish and witty, rapper Steff has been on the rise since 2015. It’s easy to see why - her clever lyrics and wicked wordplay have been driving rap and grime fans alike wild.
- She’s from Clapton in East London, but was born in Birmingham to Jamaican parents before moving to The Netherlands and then London.
- Steff grew up listening to dancehall and reggae, and is currently getting ready to release her mixtape Real Ting.
