The man who doesn’t cycle, but helps run a bike club to get people active and transform his local community

4 October 2018

A man who doesn’t cycle: hardly the perfect fit to help run a community bike charity, right?

But, having distributed approximately 700 bikes for free to people in the local area, the staff at Gallatown Bike Hub are on course to achieve their goal of ‘helping the community and getting people active.’

The bike club allows people to bring their bikes in for a quick check over and to purchase new parts.

They are able to pay flexibly, so that even people with financial difficulties can get riding straight away.

As well as helping the community, the Bike Hub has benefited the lives of its own staff, too.

Although not a cyclist, Brendan knows how important the Bike Hub is at bringing positive change in the community.

How Gallatown Bike Club is Helping the Community

Transforming Gallatown one bike at a time

Issues that bring the community together

Gallatown Bike Hub has experienced three attempted break-ins since January.

Far from being a setback, however, they led to people contributing monetary donations and offering their time to help.

Martin, one of the directors at the Hub, believes that this shows how the Bike Hub has lifted the spirits of the town. He can see a lot of younger people having fun as a result of being involved.

“It benefits the community... Gallatown is going to start to transform.”

Helping at the Hub had a positive impact on Martin’s anxiety and depression.
