This summer’s pattern of hot spells followed quickly by cooler, wet weather has led experts to a terrifying projection: the Highlands will soon be inundated with the scourge of Scottish summers, the fearsome midge.
So annoying has this pest been to Scots over the years that even its pronunciation can be a nuisance. The Nine presenters, Martin and Rebecca, , were the latest to get into heated debate — is it pronounced midge or midgie?
