‘Between 15 and 17, treat everything they say as a potential lie’ — Can holidaying parents trust teens to throw parties responsibly?
23 July 2019
When journalist and author Clare Empson went to look after her sister’s children – so that they didn’t hold a party in their parents’ absence – little did she know that own her son was having a party of his own.
“He’d put it up on Facebook the week before and it kind of went viral: his gathering of 25 turned into a rave of 200.”
When Clare and her husband arrived back home, the penny dropped that the party had been in their house. She described the scenes as a “nightmare”:
“We were so upset at what we saw as being a total breakdown in trust... Between the ages of 15 and 17, just treat everything they tell you as a potential lie.
“To be fair [to my son], he was devastated. We’ve all been teenagers. They just live for an empty house and the chance to experiment.”
