All the biggest performances from Saturday at Glastonbury 2019
Day two, it's the hottest day of the year so far and just one question is consuming punters at Worthy Farm: will Liam Gallagher be wearing a parka for his late-afternoon set on the Pyramid Stage? A fan on Twitter asked the former Oasis singer. "Watch me," he replied, adding, "Gloves and a scarf."
Before we get started on Saturday's highlights, let's give a quick shout-out to Friday's viral star - the incredible Tara Asher who signed Stormzy's headline set with all the style, panache and brilliance of the main man himself. You must see .
And now, here's what went down on the middle day of the world's greatest festival...
The Killers absolutely killed it!
The Killers - Mr Brightside
The Killers perform Mr Brightside at Glastonbury 2019
There was a sense that The Killers had something to prove to themselves with this Saturday night headline slot. They last topped the bill at Glastonbury in 2007, but recently told NME that they weren't happy with their performance. We have seen them at Worthy Farm since, but it was an under-the-radar booking - a secret set on the John Peel Stage in 2017. This was something quite different.
From the moment they came on, they were in electric form and clearly up for it, with Flowers summoning his inner Freddie Mercury to engage the crowd in an instant mass chant. And then, hit after hit after hit: Jenny Was a Friend of Mine, Somebody Told Me, The Man, When You Were Young...
Eagle-eyed punters might have spotted comedian Jimmy Carr sweeping the stage ahead of an extraordinary encore that saw the band first combine forces with the Pet Shop Boys on Always on My Mind and Human, then Johnny Marr for the Smiths' classic This Charming Man, before sending the crowd off to dance the night away with a blistering finale of Mr. Brightside, their 2003 debut single. Job done, spectacularly.

Maggie Rogers up lights up the Other Stage
Maggie Rogers - Light On
Maggie Rogers performs Light On at Glastonbury 2019
"When I was making the record and whenever a song started coming together, I would have this out of body experience where I would imagine myself playing stage left on the Other Stage at Glastonbury," Maggie Rogers told earlier today. And lo! A year later she was playing songs from that record - Heard It in a Past Life, her January-released major-label debut - on the exact stage that she imagined. Maggie's dreamy pop is perfect for a festival and we loved this mid-afternoon set.
No one could steal Ezra Collective's joy
Ezra Collective - You Can't Steal My Joy
Ezra Collective perform You Can't Steal My Joy at Glastonbury 2019
called this year's Glastonbury "a watershed moment for a genre [jazz] once confined to the margins of the festival and the larger British musical landscape". Ezra Collective were fantastic on the West Holts Stage, which was hosting jazz acts for the first time, and Saturday also featured the Mercury-nominated Sons of Kemet over on the Park Stage. And if you needed further proof that British jazz is having a real moment, check The Comet Is Coming playing Summon the Fire yesterday. Superb stuff.
"Who's this Capaldi fella?"
Lewis Capaldi - Hold Me While You Wait
Lewis Capaldi performs Hold Me While You Wait at Glastonbury 2019.
So asked Noel Gallagher in a recent Radio X interview, teeing up easily . The truth is that if Noel or anyone else didn't know Lewis Capaldi before Glastonbury started, they certainly do now. The Scottish singer-songwriter played a secret set on the 大象传媒 Introducing Stage yesterday, and he was invited to sing with Bastille, with whom he's been on tour. Saturday was all about his scheduled set, and he played a blinder. Breakout star of Glastonbury 2019?
Lizzo gets Glastonbury's juices flowing
Lizzo - Juice
Lizzo performs Juice at Glastonbury 2019
There's nothing quite like seeing an artist just as they're exploding globally and, make no mistake, Lizzo is in the midst of an incredible run of form after many years of hard graft. Just a week ago, went viral, giving a boost to her already huge third album, Cuz I Love You. She arrived at Glastonbury as plenty of people's top pick to see. "Last time we played Glastonbury it was 2013 and there was two people in the crowd," she told the thousands who came to see her this time. Her set was pure joy. It of course included her infectiously retro single Juice and, yup, she absolutely .
Janet Jackson turns Worthy Farm into her Rhythm Nation
Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation
Janet Jackson performs Rhythm Nation at Glastonbury 2019
Janet Jackson does not mess about. Playing in the middle of farm in Somerset might be an unusual setting for the American superstar - especially after a run of acclaimed shows in Las Vegas - but she seemed perfectly at home and she knew how to work this crowd. Her set, as had it, played like "a big megamix, giving it the feel of a weekend show on commercial radio, or a party where the person in charge of the Spotify has had a few too many and can't bear to let a song play out to the end". It was an explosive 45 minutes, which came complete with a world-class band and dancers.
Giddy-up! It's Foals playing a not-so-secret set
Foals - Sunday
Foals perform Sunday at Glastonbury 2019
Chris Martin turning up in the middle of Stormzy's headline performance on Friday? A genuine surprise. Foals playing an unscheduled set late on Saturday afternoon? The world and his wife seemed to have found out, helped in no small part from a tweet from the band's drummer Jack Bevan. Massive numbers flocked to the Park Stage to see them, and they weren't disappointed. Playing songs like Exits and In Degrees from their recent album Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost – Part 1, as well as older gems like Inhaler, the Oxford lads were ferocious and breathtaking.
Liam Gallagher causes major shockwaves
Liam Gallagher - Shockwave
Liam Gallagher performs Shockwave at Glastonbury 2019
No one articulates the fever we all feel for Glastonbury better than Liam Gallagher. "1 more sleep till Glastonbury Pyramid Stage," he tweeted yesterday. "I'm sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo excited." Worthy Farm is like a second home to the rock 'n' roll star and he was careful to thank the Eavises for "letting me continue my Glasto residency". His set was full of Oasis classics, but he peppered in some songs from his chart-topping debut solo album, As You Were, and new tracks Shockwave and River. But HANG ON. Where was the parka!? The gloves and scarf?
Sigrid - no longer a stranger
Sigrid - Strangers
Sigrid performs Strangers at Glastonbury 2019
What an incredible couple of years Sigrid has had. She won the 大象传媒 Sound of 2018 poll off the back of the word-of-mouth success of her debut single Don't Kill My Vibe, released her album Sucker Punch earlier this year, and pitched up for her second Glastonbury appearance brimming with confidence. Here's Strangers from the album. All together now: "Like strangers, perfect pretenders / We're falling head over heels / For something that ain't real." Louder!
Block rockin' beats with Glasto legends The Chemical Brothers
The Chemical Brothers - Galvanize
The Chemical Brothers perform Galvanize at Glastonbury 2019
The Chemical Brothers have been playing Glastonbury for longer than the 22-year-old Sigrid has been alive, always very late at night because when else could they play!? Now as much a part of the festival's tradition as mud and a chronic lack of sleep, they saw off Saturday night in classic style, pounding the crowd with dance anthems like Block Rockin' Beats, Galvanize and Hey Boy Hey Girl. As ever, their light show was mind-blowing, and not least when images of Keith Flint were beamed across Worthy Farm. It was the second time in the day the Prodigy singer had been remembered, after Liam dedicated Champagne Supernova to him during his set.
