Haim: Don't get back with bad exes

Haim brought their LA pop sounds to the Radio 1 Live Lounge to perform their new single Want You Back in a stunning live session.

But behind the song's summery melody and the sisters' sweet harmonies lies a story of break ups and regrets, one that was written from experience by all three members of the band.

"It's hard to decipher who wrote what," Alana Haim tells Radio 1 online.

"We all jump in on it; there are always three stories when it comes to every song."

For frontwoman Danielle, her story is about how you look back on failed relationships when you mature.

"It's a lot about self-reflection as you grow older," she says.

"The song is about growing up and realising there are two sides to the coin and sometimes it's your fault."

And the Haim sisters learned how to write such open and intimate lyrics from the musicians they listened to when they were growing up.

"Some of our favourite artists growing up were very open about things that were very personal to them," says bassist Este.

"Like Joni Mitchell - she's an open book when it comes to her lyrics and that's something we're just used to, we didn't know anything different, so that's just how we know to write."

But while Want You Back deals with wanting to get back together with an ex, Alana Haim says the band doesn’t believe it's always a good idea to try again.

Don't get back with bad exes, but give people you might have overlooked a second chance

"It's a case by case basis," she says.

"There are definite relationships you should never get back together with and I've been in relationships where if I ever get back with the person, my sisters might kill me.

"This is me in my 20s, this is when you're supposed to try and figure yourself out and who you are. I know very little about love, because I've been in love but I still have my whole lifetime to figure it out.

"So no - don't get back with bad exes, but give people you might have overlooked a second chance."

Haim say there's only one sure-fire way to help move on from an ex - and that involves friends and pop music.

"Go out with your friends, have a good time and dance. That's what friends are for," is Este's advice for getting over a failed relationship.

"Listen to music, it really does cure all. It doesn't matter what state of mind you're in, there's always a song that can help you out," adds Alana.

Haim also covered Selena Gomez's 2017 hit Bad Liar when they visited the Live Lounge.

They say the bassline is "one of our favourites ever" and Este Haim ranks Talking Heads' Tina Weymouth (who played bass on the song Selena sampled) as the best bass player of all time.

"We love Selena Gomez, Justin Tranter and Julia Michaels too, so it was a no brainer," says Danielle.

"We're big fans."

"I hope they hear it and I hope we do the song justice," adds Alana.
