Liverpool to Carlisle

Episode 5 of 13

Nicholas Crane presents a journey around the coast of the UK. At Lytham St Anne's, he explores the events of the UK's worst lifeboat disaster in 1886.

Geographer Nicholas Crane presents a 13-part journey around the coast of the United Kingdom, uncovering stories that have made us the island nation we are today. This leg takes him from Liverpool to Scottish Borders. At Lytham St Anne's, he explores the events of the UK's worst lifeboat disaster when 27 men died in 1886, a tragedy which helped to forge the modern RNLI.

Nicholas Crane is joined on his journey by a team of specialists. Anthropologist Alice Roberts uncovers the story of 5000-year-old human footprints on the beach near Liverpool; historian Neil Oliver experiences the dangerous quicksands of Morecambe Bay; and archaeologist Mark Horton discovers the remarkable coast defences at the end of Hadrian's Wall along the edge of the Roman Empire.
