Penny Marshall looks back at the key decisions that have been made over the last century that have produced the maternity services in the NHS today.

The UK's maternal mortality rate is one of the worst in the developed world. Most births occur in hospital, and around a quarter of them are by Caesarean section. Many women want a perfect birth and some are disappointed by the experience. In some parts of the country midwives and doctors do not have a good relationship.
