Roy tells Sid about the cheese tasting but Sid's busy, especially with the cricket. Roy tries to find out about team selection. Sid drops hints but refuses to discuss any definite decisions.

Matt's not looking forward to joining Brian and Jennifer at the Grey Gables May Ball. Lilian's solution is to dance the night away! Matt's not keen on that either, and reminds Lilian he's got two left feet. Brian's dreading the Ball too. He can't go on like this. Jennifer finally agrees to talk but they must be realistic. There's the whole family to consider - especially Alice - and the whole village will talk. Brian's solution is to sell up and move but Jennifer doesn't want that. Brian knows that if Siobhan dies he has to take care of Ruairi, otherwise he'd never be truly happy.

At least Lilian's enjoying the ball. When Matt refuses to dance, she drags Brian off. Jennifer discovers that Matt (really a good dancer) just doesn't like dancing with clodhopping Lilian. Jennifer tells Brian about it and Lilian overhears. With Brian desperate to leave, they make their apologies but Lilian's already preoccupied and agrees they've all had better evenings than this one.
