The Cost of Elderly Care

On October 1st, new government guidelines will allow more elderly people to have their care fully funded by the NHS. But what about the families who are still left with bills to pay? The Five Live Report investigates the reality of the cost of elderly care provision in the UK. Is our ageing population on the verge of a care crisis?

Long term care for the over-65s has an estimated annual price tag of 拢42 billion. Sarah Mills meets the relatives who have had to navigate the complexities of the current system. With the average residential home now costing over 拢400 per week, and with local councils cutting back on social services provision, the Five Live Report explores the financial and emotional pressures that individuals and their families are increasingly placed under in order to meet the costs of elderly care.
