Marrakesh Travel Writing Course
Writer and broadcaster David Stafford visits Morocco where he sits in on a course for would be travel writers.
MARRAKESH TRAVEL WRITING COURSE
From the Odyssey onwards, via the Travels of Marco Polo and the writings of Sir Richard Burton and the great Victorian explorers, to Thubron and Theroux, travel writing has been an integral part of literature. Most authors, at one time or another, have incorporated aspects of their journeying in their books. But visiting destinations, no matter how remote, can often be easier than conveying the sense of place to readers.
Is it possible to learn the technique of the traveller鈥檚 tale? Writer and broadcaster David Stafford visits Morocco where he sits in on a course for would be travel writers.
David joins the students as they explore the markets of Marrakesh to note the sights, sounds and smells of the souk and try to turn their observations into prose that will transport the reader to the heart of the medina. David also discusses the nature of travel writing with the tutors and reflects on whether such a course can produce the next Bruce Chatwin or Bill Bryson.
