Under the baton of Mark Elder, the Halle Orchestra performs Vaughan Williams's Symphony No 8, which was dedicated the orchestra's then music director John Barbirolli who premiered the work with the orchestra in 1956. This is followed by George Butterworth's orchestral rhapsody, which is heard alongside some of AE Housman's poems which inspired it.
