16 medals were decided including two in the athletics stadium, where the crowd could also enjoy the first day of the heptathlon and the men's 100m heats.
Four swimming finals were contested, the women's all around gymnastics was resolved and the first day of the track cycling saw Britain looking for medal success in the men's team sprint.
Elsewhere, British interest centred on archery, boxing, judo and shooting, while the badminton and tennis competitions reached a crucial stage.
