PCM3 - Grieg, Tchaikovsky

Presented by Christopher Cook, from the Royal Albert Hall, London. Alina Ibragimova (violin) and Huw Watkins (piano) in music by Debussy, Messiaen and Prokofiev.

Presented by Christopher Cook, from the Royal Albert Hall, London.

Violinist Alina Ibragimova and pianist Huw Watkins perform two works by French composers at opposite ends of their careers: Debussy's Sonata was the last work he completed, while Messiaen's Theme and Variations is a youthful piece written as a wedding present for his first wife. The violin part of Prokofiev's neo-classical Second Sonata though virtuosic is also highly lyrical and elegant, evidence of the work's inception as a sonata for flute.

Debussy: Sonata for violin and piano
Messiaen: Theme and variations, for violin and piano
Prokofiev: Sonata No 2 in D for violin and piano, Op 94a.
