Music Theatre Wales’s production of a new opera by Michael Berkeley with a libretto by novelist Ian McEwan at the Linbury Studio at the Royal Opera House. The pair collaborated on an anti-war oratorio Or Shall We Die 26 years ago. This work tells the story of a successful composer whose constant philandering causes his life to unravel at the hands of his deranged housekeeper Maria.

For You by Michael Berkeley with libretto by Ian McEwan is at the Linbury Theatre at the Royal Opera House in London and then on tour until November 24

To Be Straight With You
Compared by some to Peter Brook, Lloyd Newson’s DV8 physical theatre has won sixteen awards over the last three years including a Prix Italia and a Rose D’or. To Be Straight With You opens at the National Theatre in London and incorporates dance, text, documentary, film and animated projections to create a unique piece of theatre exploring the themes of intolerance, religion and sexuality.

A Mercy by Toni Morrison
The first novel in five years from the Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison. A Mercy is a compelling tragedy which explores the complex psychological reality of a society riven by racial tension and acute physical hardship in 1680s America and which forms a kind of prelude to her Pulitzer prize winning novel, Beloved.

Between The Covers – Women’s Magazines and Their Readers
An exhibition at the Women’s Library in London’s East End which charts the rise of women’s magazines from the 17th Century to the present day. Ranging from Peg’s Paper and Home Companion to Spare Rib and Varla’s Passed Out Again, it also includes a problem page featured in the very first women’s periodical, The Ladies Mercury in 1693.
