An Litir Bheag 184

Rinn teine sgrios air a鈥 Khintyre Technical School anns a鈥 Chill ann an Cinn T矛re. Bha sin ann an naoi ceud deug, fichead 鈥檚 a ceithir (1924). Ghluais an sgoil gu togalach eile ann an D霉n Bhreatainn. Cha robh Kintyre Technical School freagarrach mar ainm. Dh鈥檃tharraich ainm na sgoile gu Keil School 鈥 Sgoil na Cille.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Th脿inig atharrachadh no dh脿 air an sgoil. Ghabh rugbaidh 脿ite ball-coise mar phr矛omh sp貌rs na sgoile. Nochd a鈥 Gh脿idhlig air a鈥 churraic-ealam. Bha i aig m貌ran de na balaich co-dhi霉.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Chaidh c霉isean gu math anns na ficheadan is tritheadan. Ach th脿inig na ceathradan. Bha an cogadh ann. Bha pl猫anaichean Gearmailteach a鈥 leigeil bhomaichean air Abhainn Chluaidh. Bha e cunnartach ann an D霉n Bhreatainn. Ann an ceathrad 鈥檚 a h-aon (1941) ghluais an sgoil air ais a Chinn T矛re.

Chaidh an sgoil gu 脿ite eile le 鈥淐ill鈥 anns an ainm. Bha i ann am Baile na Cille ann an ceann a tuath Chinn T矛re. Bha i ann an seann taigh 鈥 Balinakill House. Bha Sir Uilleam MacFhionghain a鈥 fuireach anns an taigh sin uaireigin. Bha aon rud math ann mun 脿ite 霉r. Ghabh cuid de na balaich p脿irt anns a鈥 mh貌d ann an Ceann Loch Chille Chiarain. Bhuann-aich iad duaisean gu le貌r.

Thill an sgoil a Dh霉n Bhreat-ainn 脿s d猫idh a鈥 chogaidh. Dh鈥檉h脿s an sgoil na bu mhotha. Bha sgoilearan-latha ann. Agus th脿inig clann-nighean ann an naoi ceud deug, seachdad 鈥檚 a h-ochd. Ach bha droch shuidheachadh eacanomaigeach ann. Thuit 脿ireamh nan sgoilearan. Agus dh霉in an sgoil anns a鈥 bhliadhna d脿 mh矛le (2000).

Th貌isich mi air a鈥 chunntas mu Sgoil na Cille o chionn ceala-deug. Bha mi a鈥 bruidhinn mun charragh-chuimhne do Shir Uilleam MacFhion-ghain. Bha an carragh-cuimhne an toiseach ann am Mombasa ann an Ceinia. Ann an naoi ceud deug, seasgad 鈥檚 a ceithir, chaidh a chur a Bhreatainn. Chaidh a chur suas air beulaibh Sgoil na Cille ann an D霉n Bhreatainn.

Nuair a dh霉in an sgoil, chaidh an carragh-cuimhne a ghluasad a Cheann Loch Chille Chiarain far an do rugadh Sir Uilleam MacFhionghain. Agus sin far a bheil e an-diugh.

The Little Letter 184

A fire destroyed the Kintyre Technical School in Keil in Kintyre. That was in 1924. The school moved to another building in Dumbarton. 鈥淜intyre Technical School鈥 was not suitable as a name. The school鈥檚 name changed to Keil School 鈥 Sgoil na Cille.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 One or two changes came over the school. Rugby took the place of football as the school鈥檚 main sport. Gaelic appeared on the curriculum. Many of the boys spoke it anyway.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Things went well in the twenties and thirties. But the forties came. There was the war. German planes dropped bombs on the Clyde. It was dangerous in Dumbarton. In 1941 the school moved back to Kintyre.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The school went to another place with 鈥淐ill鈥 in the name. It was in Baile na Cille in north Kintyre. It was in an old house 鈥 Balinakill House. Sir William MacKinnon was at one time living in that house. There was one good thing about the new place. Some of the lads took part in the mod in Campbeltown. They won many prizes.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The school returned to Dumbarton after the war. The school grew bigger. There were day-students. And girls came in 1978. But there was a bad economic situation. The number of students fell. And the school closed in the year 2000.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 I started the account of Keil School a fortnight ago. I was speaking about the monument to Sir William MacKinnon. The monument was originally in Mombasa in Kenya. In 1964, it was sent to Britain. It was erected in front of Keil School in Dumbarton.

聽聽聽聽聽聽 聽When the school closed, the monument was moved to Campbeltown where Sir William MacKinnon was born. And that鈥檚 where it is today.
