Litir 503: B鈥 脿illibh?

Tha am faclair G脿idhlig a rinn Eideard Dwelly o chionn ceud bliadhna air leth math. Tha beartas ann a tha iongantach. Seo agaibh eisimpleir. 鈥橲 d貌cha gu bheil sibh air an abairt b鈥 脿ill leibh? no b鈥 脿illibh a chluinntinn. Ma chanas cuideigin rudeigin mar 鈥 agus mura cuala sibh ceart e, dh鈥檉haodadh sibh a r脿dh ris, 鈥淏鈥 脿ill leibh?鈥 Uill, dh鈥檉haodadh sibh rudeigin mar 鈥渆h?鈥 no 鈥渄猫 rud?鈥 no 鈥渄猫 thuirt thu?鈥 a r脿dh ris. Ach bhiodh e na bu mhodhaile a bhith ag r脿dh 鈥渂鈥 脿ill leibh?鈥.

Chan fhaigh sibh lorg air b鈥 脿ill leibh ann am m貌ran fhaclairean. Co-dhi霉 cha lorg sibh an abairt fon cheann-fhacal sin. Ach tha i ann an Dwelly. B鈥 脿ill: (for bu 脿ill). Would. B鈥 脿ill leam, leat, leis etc 鈥 I, thou, he etc would; am b鈥 脿ill leat mo mharbhadh?鈥 wouldst thou kill me? Ciod a b鈥 脿ill leibh? what would you have? Agus chan eil Dwelly deiseil le sin. Aig deireadh a鈥 pharagraif, tha seo. 鈥淏鈥 脿ill leibh?鈥 (a slovenly pronunciation of the last) is often used as an equivalent of I beg your pardon? when one speaker has not understood a remark made by another and wishes it repeated.

Mar a bha mi ag innse dhuibh an t-seachdain sa chaidh, tha Faclair Dwelly a-nise air an eadar-l矛on 鈥 agus bheir mi an se貌ladh-l矛n dhuibh aig deireadh na Litreach. Chaidh mi air an l脿raich agus chuir mi I beg your pardon don lorgair. Agus nochd an dearbh rud air an duilleig-l矛n air a鈥 choimpiutair 鈥檚 a th鈥 air an duilleig anns an fhaclair ph脿ipeir. B鈥櫭爄ll leibh, agus a h-uile c脿il eile.

Nise, chan eil mi ag r脿dh nach eil b鈥 脿ill leibh anns na faclairean eile idir. Tha e, ach fo 脿ill 鈥 鈥渨ish, desire鈥. Agus chan eil inneal lorg ri fhaighinn do na faclairean eile anns an aon d貌igh.

鈥橲 e dithis a rinn a鈥 chuid a bu mhotha dhen obair ann a bhith a鈥 cur Faclair Dwelly ann an riochd eileagtronaigeach. 鈥橲 iad sin M矛cheal Bauer agus Uilleam MacDhonnchaidh. Th貌isich M矛cheal air an obair o chionn aona bhliadhn鈥 deug, an toiseach le bhith a鈥 taidhpeadh gach facal air a鈥 choimpiutair. An d猫idh greis, rinn esganadh de sheann leth-bhreac dhen fhaclair. Bha sin na bu luaithe.

Th貌isich Uilleam air an aon se貌rsa pr貌iseict ann an 2005, gun fhiosta mu obair Mh矛cheil. Th脿inig an dithis c貌mhla ann an 2008 agus eatarra, chuir iad cr矛och air a鈥 phr貌iseact gu sgiobalta.

Fhuair mi moladh bho neach ann am post-dealain an latha eile mu aon fhacal ann am Beurla. Thuirt e 鈥 thallaibh don l脿raich sin, cuiribh am facal Beurla seo ann agus gheibh sibh caogad 鈥檚 a seachd (57) faclan G脿idhlig air a shon. Uill, seo agaibh feadhainn dhiubh. Tha mi airson 鈥檚 gun d猫an sibh tomhas air an fhacal Bheurla a chuir mi ann: cliabhach, cli霉in, gladaman, glaoidheaman, leidire, sidheach, siogach agus uilbh.

Tha am facal mu dheireadh 鈥 uilbh 鈥 脿 Cataibh agus tha amharas agam gun t脿inig e bhon聽t-seann Lochlannais 鈥 ma tha sin gu feum sam bith dhuibh!

Mura h-eil e agaibh fhathast, seo agaibh faclan G脿idhlig eile a tha a鈥 ciallachadh an aon rud: faol, faol-allaidh, faol-ulaith, mac-t矛re. Tha mi cinnteach gu bheil e agaibh a-nise.
Chan eil? Uill, seo faclan eile: coille-ch霉, c霉-allaidh, c霉-f脿saich, fiadh-ch霉 ...madadh-allaidh. Tha fios agaibh a-nise. Tha iad uile a鈥 ciallachadh wolf. Eadar Dwelly, Bauer agus MacDhonnchaidh, faodaidh beartas na G脿idhlig thighinn a-steach gu taigh sam bith anns an t-saoghal a-nise. Is math a rinn iad. Agus 鈥 an se貌ladh: www.dwelly.info. Feuchaibh e!

Abairtean na Litreach

tha beartas ann a tha iongantach: it has a wealth that is聽amazing; ma chanas cuideigin rudeigin mar: if somebody says something like; mura聽cuala sibh ceart e: if you didn鈥檛 hear him correctly; na bu mhodhaile: more polite; fon聽cheann-fhacal sin: under that headword; bheir mi an se貌ladh-l矛n dhuibh: I鈥檒l give you the聽web address; 鈥檚 e dithis a rinn a鈥 chuid a bu mhotha dhen obair: two people did most of聽the work; ann an riochd eileagtronaigeach: in an electronic format; M矛cheal Bauer agus聽Uilleam MacDhonnchaidh: Michael Bauer and Will Robertson; a鈥 taidhpeadh gach聽facal: typing every word; rinn e sganadh de sheann lethbhreac: he scanned an old copy;聽na bu luaithe: faster; chuir iad cr矛och air a鈥 phr貌iseact gu sgiobalta: they finished the聽project quickly; tha mi airson 鈥檚 gun d猫an sibh tomhas air an fhacal Bheurla: I want you聽to guess the English word; tha amharas agam gun t脿inig e bhon t-seann Lochlannais: I聽suspect it came from Old Norse; ma tha sin gu feum sam bith dhuibh: if that is of use to聽you; a tha a鈥 ciallachadh an aon rud: that means the same thing; feuchaibh e!: try it!

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach

Th貌isich M矛cheal air an obair o chionn aona bhliadhn鈥櫬燿eug: Michael started the work eleven years ago. We looked at the lenition of deug in聽Litir 199 (11 April 2003) and I gave you the general rule as follows: deug works in the聽same way as an adjective. Breac is a masculine word 鈥 we say breac m貌r in the聽nominative case, not breac mh貌r. So for 鈥渆leven trout鈥 we say aona bhreac deug, not聽aona bhreac dheug. Thus, you would expect me to say aona bhliadhna dheug because聽bliadhna is a feminine noun. Well, we would, except that in speech we generally elide the聽end of bhliadhna and say bhliadhn鈥 (pronounced 鈥渧lin鈥). So now, to the ear and tongue,聽the word ends with an 鈥渘鈥. Because the next word 鈥渄eug鈥 starts with a 鈥渄鈥, another聽rule comes into play 鈥 鈥渄鈥 acting as a 鈥渓enition blocker鈥 to the 鈥渘鈥 (the best known聽example is Beinn Dearg, the red mountain, rather than Beinn Dhearg, even though beinn聽is a feminine noun). Thus we don鈥檛 lenite deug and we say 鈥渁ona bhliadhn鈥 deug鈥.

Gnathas-cainnt na Litreach
