Penny Gore presents Acts 1 and 2 of Handel's opera Scipione. Plus a focus on Mendelssohn's string symphonies, with his Symphony No 6 in E flat.

Handel Operas 2009

As part of 大象传媒 Radio 3's complete cycle of Handel operas, Penny Gore presents Acts 1 and 2 of Scipione, the story of a conquering Roman general who, instead of exercising his right to possess a beautiful captive - Berenice - ends up helping her to be happy with her lover. This highly moral tale was set to music in rather a hurry by Handel, yet is considered to be among his most impressive music.
