Mendelssohn Weekend - Mary King

Mary King presents music Mendelssohn would have enjoyed during his lifetime, as well as his own works and a new commission. With pieces by Lassus, Bach, Handel and Schubert.

As part of Radio 3's Mendelssohn Weekend, marking 200 years since his birth, Mary King presents a programme exploring the composer's wider sound-world. What would he have listened to? Who were his contemporary and historical heroes?

With a varied selection of music, ranging from Bach's Triple Piano Concerto in D minor, BWV 1063 to Schubert's Erlkonig, D328, plus works by Lassus and Bach, and an excerpt from Handel's Israel in Egypt. There are also pieces by Mendelssohn himself, including his Organ Sonata, Op 65, No 5 and the Trumpet Overture, Op 101, as well as a specially-commissioned new Song Without Words.
