CBSO and Chorus/Oramo
The CBSO and Chorus plus soloists conducted by Sakari Oramo perform Stravinsky. With the chamber opera Mavra, the rarely-heard cantata The King of the Stars and The Rite of Spring.
In a concert given in Symphony Hall, Birmingham, Martin Handley presents the grand finale of the IgorFest series.
The programme features works by Stravinsky, including Fireworks, which shows the influence of Stravinsky's teacher Rimsky-Korsakov. It is followed by the comic opera Mavra - dedicated to Tchaikovsky - and which is a witty setting of a Pushkin tale set in a Russian village.
His strange, visionary 1912 cantata The King of the Stars precedes a work composed at the same time, and famous for its scandalous Paris premiere - The Rite of Spring.
