Matthew Sweet talks to Oscar-winning screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, who makes his directorial debut with Synecdoche, New York, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Samantha Morton and Catherine Keener.

Often described as having a surreal style, Kaufman's previous work includes Being John Malkovich, Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. His new film is about a theatre director who struggles with his work and the women in his life, as he attempts to create a life-size replica of New York inside a warehouse as part of his new play.
