He was聽famous as a writer and a political聽person.聽Robert belonged to the gentry.聽His mother was half Spanish.聽Spanish was his first language. He聽was at Harrow public [private]聽school in England.聽He went to Argentina. He made聽a fortune as a cattle rancher. He聽was skilful on horseback. He was聽famous as a gaucho (cowboy). In聽Argentina he was called Don聽Roberto.聽In 1883, his father died. Robert聽returned to Britain. He got involved聽in politics. He was a socialist. He聽stood as a Liberal candidate in the聽national election in 1886.聽His manifesto was radical. He聽wanted rights for the workers and聽ordinary people. He want to abolish聽the House of Lords. He wanted all聽adults in the land to have the vote.聽He wanted to keep the working day聽at eight hours. Robert Cunninghame Graham聽belonged to the gentry. But he was a聽socialist. He was also a Scottish聽nationalist. To start with he was a聽Liberal member of parliament. But聽they weren鈥檛 far enough on the left聽wing.聽Robert stood up for the rights聽of poor people. He also stood up for聽the rights of people to protest聽peacefully on the street. In the autumn聽of 1887, things were [getting]聽disorderly. There was a big day on聽the 13th of November. Thousands of聽people were in Trafalgar Square in聽London.聽The day is remembered as 聽Bloody Sunday. Robert was there.聽The police beat him up. The police聽beat up many people that day. But聽Robert got six weeks in prison for聽protesting.聽Robert was radical. He left the聽Liberal Party. He established the聽Scottish Labour Party with Keir聽Hardie. He stood for that party in聽Glasgow. That was in the general聽election in 1892. He wasn鈥檛 successful.聽His life as a parliamentarian聽was over.聽But his political life wasn鈥檛聽over. He believed in self-government聽for Scotland. He was the first聽president of the Scottish National聽Party.聽Robert鈥檚 life outside politics 聽was also interesting. He left for聽Morocco on one occasion. He was聽aiming to ride [on a horse] through聽the Atlas Mountains to a town called聽Taroudant. But the town was off-limits聽to foreigners. It was most聽especially off-limits to Christians.聽Graham disguised himself as a聽Turkish doctor. He was near聽Taroudant when he was arrested.聽He related the history of the affair in聽the book Mogreb-El-Acksa.聽He wrote many books about聽horses, travel and history. And he聽was a personal friend to many聽famous authors and artists. Robert聽Cunninghame Graham was himself聽famous in his day. We ought not to聽forget him today.
