Litir 516: Gilleasbaig Cook

Bha Gilleasbaig, no Archibald, Cook na sh脿r-shearmonaiche. Bha e na mhinistear. An d猫idh an聽sgaraidh san eaglais ann an ochd ceud deug, ceathrad 鈥檚 a tr矛 (1843), bha e anns an Eaglais聽Shaoir ann an Deimhidh, faisg air Inbhir Nis. Uaireannan bhiodh e a鈥 cumail sheirbheisean a-muigh聽l脿imh ris an eaglais oir cha robh an togalach m貌r gu le貌r airson nan ceudan a rachadh a聽dh鈥櫭╥steachd ris.

Bhiodh e a鈥 searmonachadh ann an G脿idhlig agus uaireannan ann am Beurla agus chaidh聽m貌ran de na searmonan aige a ghl猫idheadh air p脿ipear. Cha deach am foillseachadh ann an聽cruth leabhair fhathast, ge-t脿. Airson fiosrachadh orra, tha mi an urra ri Tormod Caimbeul a聽thug 貌raid inntinneach seachad air Cook do Chomunn G脿idhlig Inbhir Nis. Tha an 貌raid a-nise聽air nochdadh ann an cruth p脿ipeir anns an iris as 霉ire de Transactions a鈥 Chomuinn.

Bha seasamh car neo-脿bhaisteach aig Cook air rud no dh脿 co-cheangailte ris an eaglais聽is ris na sgriobtaran. Mar eisimpleir, bha e dhen bheachd gun robh anam duine a鈥 tighinn bho a聽ph脿rantan; bha a鈥 chuid mh貌r anns an eaglais aige dhen bheachd gun tigeadh an t-anam gu聽d矛reach bho Dhia.

Agus cha robh Cook taiceil don iomairt airson casg a chur air deoch l脿idir. Bha m貌rananns an Eaglais Shaoir air a r脿dh gu s貌laimte nach gabhadh iad deoch l脿idir sam bith agus nach聽toireadh iad deoch do dhaoine eile. Tha e coltach gun robh Cook dhen bheachd gur e聽atharrachadh spioradail a bha a dh矛th air daoine 鈥 gum biodh iad a鈥 tionndadh gu Cr矛osd, 鈥檚聽nach robh seachnadh na dibhe mar ph脿irt dheth sin. 鈥淭ha an-diugh d貌ighean 霉r鈥 aca air聽peacaidhean a thr猫igsinn,鈥 thuirt e bhon ch霉baid. 鈥淕abhaidh iad pledge, ach chan eil sin ach a聽bhith a鈥 cur f脿inne ann an sr貌n muice.鈥 Air an l脿imh eile, bha e an aghaidh ce貌l is dannsadh, a鈥櫬爏maoineachadh gun robh iad peacach.

Bha Cook gu l脿idir an aghaidh nam fuadaichean a bha a鈥 tachairt ann an Deimhidh aigdeireadh nan caogadan. Bha n脿dar de rup ann airson croitean fhaighinn air mh脿l agus bhiodh聽cuid nach b鈥 urrainn uiread a ph脿igheadh air an cur a-mach 脿s na croitean aca. 鈥淪anntaichidh聽iad fearann an n脿baidh,鈥 thuirt e, 鈥渁gus, ged a chitheadh iad gul nan creutairean a tha iad a鈥 cur聽a-mach 脿s an 脿itean c貌mhnaidh, cha bhean e riu鈥 nas m貌 na leaghas an t-uisge na clachan.鈥澛

Ged a dh鈥檉h脿s Cook ainmeil ann an Deimhidh, bha teans ann bliadhnaichean roimhegum falbhadh e a-null thairis. Bha cuid de Gh脿idheil ann an Ceap Breatainn ann an Canada a鈥櫬燽eachdachadh air Cook a ghairm mar mhinistear dhaibh. Dh鈥檌arr iad air a鈥 mhinistear ainmeil聽thall an sin 鈥 an t-Urramach Tormod MacLe貌id 鈥 sgr矛obhadh gu Cook airson faighinn a-mach聽am biodh 霉idh aige ann a bhith a鈥 dol a-null. Chaidh litrichean eadar an dithis ach th脿inig an聽gnothach gu ceann nuair a ch脿in MacLe貌id Cook.

Chaochail Cook ann an ochd ceud deug, seasgad 鈥檚 a c貌ig (1865), 脿s d猫idh dha sreathstr貌can fhulang. Ach tha e air a chuimhneachadh fhathast ann an Deimhidh is Srath Narann.

Bu mhath leam cr矛och a chur air a鈥 chunntas seo le marbhrann do Chook a bh鈥 air asgr矛obhadh dha, ann an G脿idhlig, le fear Seumas MacBheathain:B鈥 e ministear sg矛r鈥 Dheimhidh e鈥橲 chan aithne dhomh ach gannA riaraicheadh cho somaltaAn t-anam a bhiodh fann.Bha (a) chaitheamh beatha-s鈥 is eisimpleir鈥橲 a theagaisg anns gach 脿mToirt dearbhadh gun robh an cumantasA chomann ris a鈥 Cheann.

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach

air mh脿l: on rent. Fhuair mi an c脿r sin air mh脿l (I rented that聽car). We generally teach learners that the preposition air (meaning 鈥渙n, upon鈥, rather than聽鈥渁fter鈥) does not lenite the following (indefinite) noun eg air b貌rd, air balach, but the full聽picture is not quite that simple. In Irish Gaelic, the equivalent prepositon (ar) generally causes聽lenition (the Irish say ar chrann for 鈥渙n a tree鈥, rather than ar crann) and this appears to be聽the historical situation in Scottish Gaelic. The traditional lenition is is preserved in many聽phrases, in addition to air mh脿l, eg air bhioran (on tenterhooks), air bhoil (furious), air chrith聽(shaking), air thoiseach (ahead, in front) and mean air mhean (little by little).
